Before your tattoo appointment, eat a full meal, drink plenty of water, sleep well, and skip alcohol for 24 hours. Keep your skin clean and moisturized, avoid sun exposure, and wear comfortable, dark clothing. Here is the full checklist we give our clients at HRNDZ Tattoo Studio, from skin prep to studio policies.
Skin Preparation Tips
Healthy skin holds ink better and heals faster, so start taking care of it days before your session.
- Shave the tattoo area in advance to avoid cuts or irritation.
- Keep your skin clean and well-moisturized every day leading up to your appointment.
- Skip creams, oils, lotions, and strong perfumes on the day of your session.
- Avoid sun exposure and tanning. Sunburned or irritated skin can’t be tattooed.
Health and Hydration Essentials
A long session takes energy, so arrive ready.
- Eat a full meal before you come in to keep your blood sugar stable.
- Stay hydrated and get a good night’s sleep.
- Avoid alcohol, drugs, and psychoactive substances for at least 24 hours. They thin your blood and increase bleeding.
What to Wear to a Tattoo Appointment
Wear loose, comfortable, dark-colored clothing that gives your artist easy access to the area being tattooed: shorts for a thigh piece, a tank top or short sleeves for an arm or shoulder. Dark fabrics hide ink and ointment stains, and a spare layer keeps you warm during multi-hour sessions.
By placement
- Arm or shoulder: tank top or short-sleeve tee
- Thigh, knee, or calf: loose shorts
- Ribs or chest: zip-up or button-up top
- Back: loose top that’s easy to pull up or take off
- Hand, ankle, or foot: slip-on shoes and easy-to-remove socks
What to avoid
- Tight clothing that rubs a fresh tattoo
- Light-colored or favorite pieces that could get stained
- Jewelry near the tattoo area
